Tan John

John has more than 28 years of working experience in IT, education and business sectors. His extensive management experience spans across diverse areas, and he has held various senior management appointments.  A veteran in the IT and education sector, John was recognised for his excellent contributions and was awarded The Public Administration Medal (Silver) in the 2007 National Day Awards. John is a Fellow of the Singapore Computer Society (FSCS) and has served the Singapore Computer Society (SCS) as Vice President, Honorary Treasurer and Executive Council Member. John was also the Executive Council Member of the Association of Information Security Professionals (AISP) during its formation years. John was a recipient of the ASEAN CIO Awards 2015.

John started his career as an R&D Engineer in the private sector, specialising in supercomputing, parallel processing, imaging and telecommunications prior to joining Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP). John was instrumental in building NYP’s IT capabilities in e-commerce, IT security, innovations and industrial projects. He was the Deputy Principal before returning to the industry to join StarHub in 2013. His portfolio at NYP covered a wide range of management responsibilities, including technology and innovation, industry and international collaborations, academic as well as corporate and student services.

John was the CIO of StarHub. He was responsible for charting the strategic direction and led the design and development of IT systems to provide a greater synergy to business and agility, enabling the company to respond swiftly to technology challenges and business opportunities. John’s CIO portfolio was expanded to oversee Customer Service, Consumer Channel Sales and Business Excellence, to strive for excellence in operations, customer centricity and business effectiveness. John retired from StarHub in 2017 and is now a Partner at the Tembusu Block Chain Fund. He is also currently serving as an Advisor to various companies.

John holds a Master of Business Administration from the National University of Singapore (NUS), a Master in Computing Science and a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) from the Newcastle University. John topped his Executive MBA course at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and was awarded the Chua Joon Eng Gold Medal for being the best graduate.
